What You Need
Ingredients for one matcha latte:
- 1 tsp (2g) ceremonial or premium grade matcha powder - 2 oz (60ml) hot water at 175F (80C) -- not boiling - 6 oz (180ml) milk of choice, steamed or cold - Optional: 1 tsp honey, maple syrup, or simple syrup
Equipment: fine mesh sifter, matcha whisk (chasen) or electric frother, matcha bowl or small cup, milk frother or small saucepan.
| Milk Type | Flavor Profile | Calories (6oz) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oat milk | Creamy, slightly sweet, neutral | ~90 kcal | Best overall for lattes; froths well |
| Whole dairy milk | Rich, creamy, classic | ~110 kcal | Traditional; froths best of all |
| Almond milk | Light, slightly nutty | ~30 kcal | Lower calorie; thinner texture |
| Coconut milk (carton) | Mild coconut flavor | ~45 kcal | Dairy-free; adds subtle sweetness |
| Soy milk | Neutral, creamy | ~65 kcal | Froths well; good protein content |
How to Make It
Follow these steps in order. The most common mistake is skipping the sifting step, which causes clumps.
1. Sift 1 tsp (2g) matcha through a fine mesh sifter into your bowl or cup. This removes clumps and is not optional. 2. Add 2 oz (60ml) of hot water at 175F (80C). If you do not have a thermometer, bring water to a boil and let it cool for 2 to 3 minutes. 3. Whisk vigorously in a W or M motion (not circular) for 20 to 30 seconds until the matcha is fully dissolved and a light foam forms on top. 4. Steam or heat your milk separately. For a hot latte, heat to 150F (65C). For an iced latte, use cold milk. 5. Pour the whisked matcha into your cup, then add the milk. For a hot latte, pour milk over matcha. For an iced latte, add ice first, then cold milk, then pour matcha over the top. 6. Add sweetener if desired. Taste before sweetening -- good ceremonial matcha is naturally sweet.
Tips for the Best Result
These details separate a good matcha latte from a great one.
Use water at 175F (80C), not boiling. Water above 185F destroys L-theanine and chlorophyll, producing a bitter, dull-colored result.
Always sift. Matcha clumps on contact with moisture. Sifting takes 10 seconds and prevents a gritty texture.
Whisk in a W motion, not circular. The W motion creates more surface agitation and produces better foam.
Use 2g of matcha, not more. More matcha does not mean better flavor -- it means more bitterness. If you want stronger flavor, use higher quality matcha.
Common mistakes to avoid:
- Water too hot: produces bitter, dark-colored matcha. Fix: let boiling water cool 2 to 3 minutes. - Skipping the sift: produces clumpy, gritty texture. Fix: always sift. - Wrong ratio: too much matcha makes it bitter; too little makes it weak. Fix: use exactly 2g (1 tsp) per serving. - Circular whisking: produces less foam and uneven mixing. Fix: use W or M motion. - Cold water for dissolving: matcha does not dissolve in cold water. Fix: always use hot water for the initial dissolve, even for iced lattes.
Variations
Once you have the base recipe, these variations are simple adjustments.
Iced matcha latte: Follow steps 1 to 3 above. Fill a glass with ice, add 6 oz cold milk, then pour the whisked matcha over the top. Do not skip the hot water dissolve step -- cold water alone causes clumps.
Vanilla matcha latte: Add 1/4 tsp vanilla extract or 1 tsp vanilla simple syrup to the milk before combining.
Strawberry matcha latte: Add 2 tbsp strawberry puree (blend fresh or frozen strawberries with a little sugar) to the bottom of the glass before adding milk and matcha.
Protein matcha latte: Add 1 scoop (25g) of unflavored or vanilla protein powder to the milk and shake or blend before combining with matcha.
Dairy-free: Use oat milk, almond milk, or coconut milk. Oat milk produces the creamiest result.
Storage
A matcha latte is best consumed immediately. The foam dissipates within a few minutes and the matcha can settle.
If you need to prepare ahead: whisk the matcha paste (matcha + hot water only, no milk) and store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Add milk when ready to serve.
Do not store a fully assembled matcha latte -- the milk and matcha separate and the texture degrades.

Best Matcha Powders for This Recipe
For lattes, use ceremonial or premium grade matcha. The milk dilutes the matcha flavor, so quality matters -- low-grade matcha produces a dull, bitter latte. Look for bright green color, fine texture, and a grassy-sweet smell.
Key attributes to look for: ceremonial or premium grade, Japanese origin preferred, published third-party lab results (COA), price per gram reasonable for daily use.
