Blend 1 tsp (2g) matcha powder with 1 frozen banana, 1 cup oat milk, and a handful of ice for 30 seconds. Matcha blends well with banana, blueberry, and spinach. Use culinary or premium grade matcha -- ceremonial grade is wasted in smoothies. Total time is 3 minutes.

What You Need
Base recipe ingredients (banana matcha smoothie):
- 1 tsp (2g) matcha powder (culinary or premium grade) - 1 frozen banana (frozen gives creamier texture than fresh) - 1 cup (240ml) oat milk or milk of choice - 1/2 cup ice - Optional: 1 tsp honey or maple syrup
Equipment: standard blender.
How to Make It
1. Add all ingredients to the blender in this order: liquid first, then frozen banana, then matcha, then ice. Adding liquid first protects the blender blade. 2. Blend on high for 30 to 45 seconds until completely smooth. 3. Taste and adjust: add sweetener if needed, more milk if too thick, more ice if too warm. 4. Pour and drink immediately. Smoothies separate quickly -- drink within 10 minutes.

Tips and Common Mistakes
Use frozen banana, not fresh. Frozen banana creates a thick, creamy texture without needing as much ice. Fresh banana produces a thinner, icier smoothie.
Add matcha last (before ice). Adding matcha directly to liquid first can cause it to clump. Adding it after the banana helps it blend more evenly.
Do not over-blend. 30 to 45 seconds is enough. Over-blending warms the smoothie and reduces the vibrant green color.
Common mistakes:
- Matcha clumping: caused by adding matcha to cold liquid without blending immediately. Fix: add all ingredients and blend right away. - Brown color: caused by blending matcha with high-acid fruits (citrus, berries) for too long. Fix: blend briefly; add berries after matcha is incorporated. - Too bitter: caused by too much matcha or low-quality matcha. Fix: use 1 tsp (2g) maximum; use culinary or premium grade. - Too thin: caused by not enough frozen ingredients. Fix: use frozen banana and reduce liquid.
Storage
Drink immediately. Smoothies separate and oxidize quickly -- the color and texture degrade within 30 minutes.
If you must store: pour into a sealed container, fill to the top to minimize air exposure, and refrigerate for up to 4 hours. Shake or blend briefly before drinking.

Best Matcha Powders for Smoothies
Any grade works in smoothies -- the strong fruit and milk flavors mask the subtle differences between ceremonial and culinary grade. Organic matcha is preferred for smoothies since you are consuming the whole leaf and organic certification means no synthetic pesticides.
Cost per gram matters more than grade for smoothies. Look for culinary or premium grade, organic preferred, at a reasonable price per gram.
