Oat Milk Matcha Latte Recipe
By Nick D · Founder, Steady Matcha
Published July 1, 2026
Sift 1 tsp (2g) ceremonial matcha into a bowl, whisk with 2 oz of 175F water until frothy, then add 6 oz of steamed or cold oat milk. Oat milk is the best dairy-free option for matcha lattes -- it is naturally sweet, froths well, and has a neutral flavor that complements rather than competes with matcha.

What You Need
- 1 tsp (2g) ceremonial or premium grade matcha - 2 oz (60ml) hot water at 175F (80C) - 6 oz (180ml) oat milk (barista blend recommended for best frothing) - Optional: 1 tsp maple syrup or honey
Best oat milk brands for lattes: Oatly Barista Edition, Minor Figures, Califia Farms Barista Blend. Barista blends are formulated to froth and steam without separating.
How to Make It
Hot oat milk matcha latte: 1. Sift 1 tsp (2g) matcha into a bowl or cup. 2. Add 2 oz of 175F water and whisk vigorously in a W motion for 20 to 30 seconds until frothy. 3. Steam 6 oz of oat milk to 150F (65C) using a steam wand or heat in a saucepan. Froth with a handheld frother. 4. Pour the steamed oat milk over the whisked matcha. 5. Add sweetener if desired.
Iced oat milk matcha latte: 1. Whisk matcha with hot water as above. 2. Fill a glass with ice. 3. Add 6 oz cold oat milk. 4. Pour the matcha shot over the top. Stir before drinking.
Why Oat Milk Works Best for Matcha
Oat milk has a naturally sweet, neutral flavor that does not compete with matcha's earthy, grassy notes. It froths better than most plant milks (especially barista blends) and has a creamy texture similar to whole milk. Almond milk is thinner and can taste slightly bitter alongside matcha. Coconut milk adds a coconut flavor that some people enjoy but others find distracting. Soy milk froths well but has a stronger flavor.
| Milk Type | Frothing | Flavor with Matcha | Calories (6oz) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oat milk (barista) | Excellent | Neutral, slightly sweet | ~90 kcal |
| Soy milk | Good | Slightly beany | ~65 kcal |
| Almond milk | Fair | Slightly nutty, thin | ~30 kcal |
| Coconut milk (carton) | Fair | Mild coconut | ~45 kcal |
| Whole dairy milk | Excellent | Rich, classic | ~110 kcal |
Tips for the Best Result
Use barista blend oat milk. Regular oat milk can separate when heated. Barista blends are formulated to steam and froth without separating.
Do not overheat oat milk. Oat milk can become slimy if heated above 160F (71C). Steam to 150F (65C) for the best texture.
Use 175F water for the matcha. Hotter water makes matcha bitter regardless of milk type.
For an iced latte, use cold oat milk straight from the refrigerator -- no heating needed.
