The most useful number in matcha shopping is not the price on the tin. It is the price per gram. A $28 bag of 30g and a $45 bag of 100g look very different on the shelf; at $0.93/g and $0.45/g they tell a different story. We computed that number for every product in the dataset.
Finding 01Buying bigger saves more than you think
The bulk-discount curve above is steeper than most shoppers expect. Moving from a 30g tin to a 100g bag typically cuts the per-gram cost by 30 to 50%. Moving to a 300g bag cuts it further. The savings are real and consistent across brands, not just a function of grade.
The catch: freshness. Matcha oxidizes after opening. A 300g bag is a good deal only if you go through it in a few months. For most daily drinkers, the 75 to 150g range hits the sweet spot between economy and freshness.
Finding 02The 30g tin is a premium format
The most common entry size for ceremonial matcha is 30g, and the most common price for that format is $35.00. At that price and size, you are paying a format premium: the per-gram cost is higher than the same brand's 100g offering, often by 40% or more. The 30g tin is a gift format and a trial format. It is not the economical way to drink matcha daily.
Finding 03The market has two distinct price clusters
The distribution of per-gram prices is not a smooth bell curve. It has two humps: a culinary cluster around $0.25 to $0.50/g, and a ceremonial cluster around $0.80 to $1.50/g, with a thin bridge between them. Products in the bridge zone are often labeled "premium" or "latte grade." The gap between the clusters is real, but the labels that claim to mark it are not reliable guides to which side you are on.
Method and limitations
Data. 791 pure matcha powder products with a listed price and package weight. Accessories, bundles, sweetened blends, and non-matcha listings were removed. Prices converted to USD at dated rates.
Bins. Size bins: up to 25g, 25-45g, 45-75g, 75-150g, 150-300g, 300-600g, 600g+. Bins with fewer than 3 products are omitted from the curve.
Caveats. Price per gram is computed from the listed price and listed weight. Subscription discounts, bundle pricing, and sale prices are included when observed. Currency conversion introduces small error at the margins.
